“Standard height” is not enough information for a school furniture order. A buyer needs a room schedule, a matched chair and table specification, and evidence that covers the models being purchased.

Use the edition named in your tender and its measurement procedures for acceptance. A buying note cannot replace the standard or a laboratory report.

Start with the correct part of the standard

The BSI EN 1729 series overview distinguishes two parts: Part 1 covers functional dimensions; Part 2 covers safety requirements and test methods.

A dimension sheet and a safety test report answer different questions. Ask the supplier to identify the part, edition, tested model and configuration. Check these against the tender before treating a general compliance statement as evidence for an order.

Specify the chair and table together

A size mark links the seating and table dimensions. Put the required mark and the actual dimensions in both purchase-order lines when desks and chairs are sourced separately.

Do not rely on an age label alone. Ask the school for pupil measurements and the intended use of each room, then have the proposed sizes checked against the applicable standard. Different pupils in the same class may need different furniture sizes.

Published charts may omit sizes or use their own labels. Verify the numbering and dimensions against the specified edition rather than renumbering a supplier's chart. Record the actual dimensions alongside the size mark so the order remains unambiguous.

Information to record What to ask the supplier
Standard Part and edition used for the quotation
Size mark Mark required for each room or pupil group
Chair Seat height and other specified functional dimensions
Table Worktop height and other specified functional dimensions
Evidence Report reference, tested model and configuration
Quantity Units at each size and their packing references

Height adjustment needs a setting plan

An adjustment range is a capability, not proof that every chair and table combination within it meets a size mark. A desk may reach a height that the accompanying chair cannot match.

Ask for the available settings of both components. Check the pair at the intended setting, the locking method and the supporting report. Avoid assigning a size mark from a photograph or from a height range alone.

A001 school desk and stool set
Request the current A001 model sheet and available settings when preparing a room schedule.

Agree who sets the height, how the setting is checked and what instructions are supplied for later changes. Where marking is required, state the requirements in the order and compare them with the applicable standard.

A purchase-order note can record the intended result:

Supply the desk and chair configurations listed in the approved room schedule. Confirm the agreed height settings, locking instructions, marking and supporting test reports before production.

Practical receiving checks

Receiving checks help find mismatches. They do not replace the specified laboratory tests.

  1. Match the carton to the schedule. Check model, size, colour and quantity before distributing units to rooms.
  2. Measure the agreed dimensions. Use the procedure and tolerances in the applicable specification, with the furniture on the required test surface.
  3. Check an adjustable setting. Follow the assembly instructions and verify that the lock and hardware are fitted correctly.
  4. Check the documentation. Match report identifiers and model names to the goods, and ask about differences in construction or configuration.
  5. Record discrepancies. Photograph the label, model, measured dimension and carton reference so the supplier can investigate a specific unit.

What to send with an enquiry

Send the room list, quantities, required standard and edition, and mandatory report or marking requirements. Include the original tender chart so its numbering can be checked.

We can review the model list with you and confirm the available dimensions and documents in the quotation. Keep that specification with the approved sample and receiving records.
